Facility Details

Advanced Materials Characterization and Testing (AMCaT) Laboratory.
Located within the College of Engineering, AMCaT provides the UC Davis research community with access to state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation for the investigation of material properties. The facility specializes in high-resolution imaging and chemical analysis through electron microscopy (SEM, TEM, STEM) and X-ray spectrometry and diffraction (XPS, XRD). AMCaT supports interdisciplinary research across engineering, chemistry, physics, and biology by offering comprehensive instrument training, technical support, and scientific expertise tailored to specific experimental systems. The facility also provides dedicated resources for sample preparation. The facility houses unique instrumentation essential for nanoscale research, including the only aberration-corrected Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (STEM) in the Sacramento region, which is equipped with specialized in-situ holders for dynamic experimentation. Additionally, AMCaT operates the first Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) of its class in North America, allowing for the study of materials under variable pressure and humidity conditions. The laboratory has also recently acquired two high-precision XRD systems optimized for crystallography and thin-film analysis. These capabilities enable the advanced characterization of inorganic, organic, and hybrid materials under realistic conditions.
