UBC MRI Research hosts a wide range of human and preclinical in vivo imaging as well as develops novel MRI techniques. Our facilities consist of a Philips 3.0 Tesla MRI scanner for studies on humans, a Bruker small bore 9.4 Tesla MRI scanner, and a computing facility for image archival and analysis.
The two scanners are entirely dedicated to research, and MR scanning is carried out on a cost recovery basis. The scanners were selected to cater to a very broad range of in vivo applications and the Imaging Centre staff is trained to support any research projects that the scanners can accommodate.

The Analytical Core for Metabolomics and Nutrition (ACMaN) is located on the first floor of the Varity Building. In service since 2016, ACMaN allows researchers to analyze and track biological compounds, such as nutrients, as they’re processed in the human body. Using this technology, researchers are able to track how these small molecules change during the course of a disease or treatment to better understand the disease itself and to develop new diagnostic tools and therapies. ACMaN plays an integral role in research on metabolic diseases, hormones, and the effects of nutrition on childhood development. The ACMaN Core provides key research and analytical support to several research groups.
This facility operates on a fee-for-service basis, which allows for partial cost recovery for operating expenses and service contracts for the instruments. Flow cytometry is a powerful technology used for characterizing and analyzing cells. The fluidics, optics, and electronics systems in flow cytometry work together to simultaneously measure and analyze multiple physical characteristics of particles, usually, cells, as they move in a fluid stream through a beam of light. A flow cytometer can tell us about a particle’s relative size, fluorescence intensity, and granularity or internal complexity. The BCCHR Imaging Core is a multi-user facility located on the 4th floor in the Translational Research Building (TRB) at A4-110. It houses five powerful microscopes and four image data analysis computers to provide imaging a wide range of samples, including cell structures in tissue sections, and subcellular structures and 3D morphologies of single cells. This allows for high-throughput screening for quick profiling of cells at a large scale, multiplexing imaging over 100 targets, time-lapse imaging to observe cell behaviour in real time, and also super-resolution techniques to resolve structures at the level of single proteins. A full-time technician provides training, consultation, and guidance to researchers, from sample preparation to data analysis.

The Histology facility offers services for processing delicate and valuable tissue samples, automated equipment for tissue processing, paraffin embedding, micro-sectioning, and staining. Our dedicated research technicians offer consultation, experimental design, and troubleshooting and work closely with researchers to get the most optimal tissue sections tailored to each project. The facility also provides training on the microtome and paraffin embedder to allow flexibility in workflow.

The UBC Bioimaging facility (BIF) provides researchers with top-end optical and electron microscope infrastructure for live-cell imaging, multi-photon imaging, advanced sample preparation including cryo-preparation for electron microscopy, routine SEM and TEM, Cryo-TEM, TEM tomography, and Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy (CLEM). Currently, the BIF is equipped with 4 electron microscopes (1 SEM and 3 TEMs), 2 advanced fluorescence microscopes (confocal/multi-photon and spinning disk), cryo-fixation (High pressure freezer, Vitrobot) and EM processing equipment (Microwave, critical point dryer, coaters).
The facility is open to everyone and provides microscopy access, training and service. We have three technical staff who all have more than 10 years of experience providing technical knowledge and can support users from diverse research disciplines from life sciences to material sciences.
