The Precision Human Health Laboratory (PHHL) is a specialized collaborative research facility at the University of Alberta, Canada. Our group adopts a multidisciplinary approach to advance the understanding of the three aims. Aim 1. Understand the mechanism(s) of vascular dysfunction in chronic disease
Aim 2. Identify how vascular dysfunction contributes to exercise intolerance
Aim 3. Evaluate how exercise training improves vascular dysfunction and exercise intolerance using innovative clinical trial designs.
These common aims will be examined by the principal investigators across three patient groups (respiratory, cancer, chronic kidney disease).
Dr. M. Stickland is a Professor of Medicine with expertise in cardiopulmonary physiology and exercise. His research program includes examining: 1. Cardiovascular complications of respiratory disease, 2. Vascular regulation, 3. Dyspnea and exercise intolerance in cardiopulmonary disease, 4. Pulmonary rehabilitation and disease management.
Dr. Pituskin is an Associate Professor, Tier 2 Canada Research Chair, and a pioneer in cardio-oncology. Her research program demonstrates sequential development of high-priority knowledge aiming to better understand and holistically address the multifactorial interplay of individual physiology, treatment-related physiologic impacts, informative biomarkers and patient experience.
Dr. Thompson is an Assistant Professor and Nephrologist with a developing research program using exercise as therapeutic strategy for the prevention of adverse CV outcomes in people with CKD. She is an early career investigator and obtained CIHR funding to examine the effect of exercise on hypertension and CV risk in CKD.
The PHHL builds on Dr. Stickland’s highly successful 2013 CFI grant (#30732) which enabled several CIHR and NSERC grants, >50 publications from Dr. Stickland’s team and >15 publications from Drs. Pituskin, Thompson, and collaborators

ADInstruments Finapres Finometer MIDI (115V)
Continuous measurement of blood pressure using finger cuff and photoplethysmography.
ADInstruments Human NIBP System
The Human NIBP Nano monitoring system allows recording and measurement of a continuous blood pressure signal from an adult human via a non-invasive dual finger cuff system. The continuous blood pressure monitoring system contains the Human NIBP Nano Wrist Unit (Manufactured by Finapres Medical Systems), one Human NIBP Nano Height Correction Unit (HCU) and the Human NIBP Nano Interface (which both provides power to the Wrist Unit and facilitates communication with LabChart via USB).
ADInstruments Non Invasive Pulse Tonometer
Pulse Wave Tonometer enables simple, non-invasive assessment of the cardiovascular system by delivering high-fidelity blood pressure waveforms from direct skin contact with the carotid, femoral or radial artery.
BpTru Automatic blood pressure monitor
Automatic blood pressure and pulse measurement system using arm cuff
Cardinal Health Crash Cart Defibrillator
A crash cart defibrillator is a critical component of a crash cart (also known as a "code cart"), which is a specially equipped trolley used in hospitals for emergency resuscitation, especially in cases of cardiac arrest.
COMPLIOR COMPLIOR Pulse-wave velocity machine
Non-invasive measurement of Pulse-wave velocity as an indicator of arterial stiffness. Measurement sites are carotid, radial, femoral and distal arteries
Covidien Pulse Oximeter
Human finger pulse oximetry works by emitting light from a pair of light-emitting diodes to measure the oxygen saturation level (SpO2)
D.E Hokanson Rapid Cuff Inflator
A Rapid Cuff Inflator is a device designed to quickly and efficiently inflate a blood pressure cuff or other similar medical devices. This tool is particularly useful in medical settings where time-sensitive measurements are needed, such as in operating rooms, intensive care units, or during certain diagnostic tests.
