Facility Details

The Mass Spectrometry Core is part of Edinburgh Clinical Research Facility, situated in the Institute for Neuroscience and Cardiovascular Research in the Queen‘s Medical Research Institute at the University of Edinburgh. We teach and host undergraduate, MSc and PhD students and clinical research fellows the theory and practice of analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, chromatography and its applications to clinical and biological research questions. We have a range of mass spectrometers including Exploris 240 Orbitrap, QTrap 6500+, QTrap 7500+, microflow, Stellar ion trap and GC-MS/MS for small molecules.
We have expertise and automation for sample preparation, bioanalysis for targeted small molecule analysis of endogenous compounds and drugs in clinical and pre-clinical studies.
We also provide a "service" of sample analysis where we operate under Good Clinical Practice for laboratories for studies. Steroids, drugs and endogenous molecules and metabolic pathways in plasma, serum, tissue.
We carry out research and consulting in Imaging Mass spectrometry with a full workflow of cryostat, MALDI sprayers, a Sublimator a Waters Synapt G2Si, MALDI and DESI and a range of software packages and workflows developed.
