The PEF is a central resource within the
College of Medicine and Health, offering expert support for all aspects of recombinant protein production. Using a range of expression systems, we produce proteins suitable for diverse downstream applications. Our services are provided at close to cost price, ensuring accessibility while maintaining sustainability. The PEF is committed to delivering a wide variety of proteins and responding flexibly to user needs.

The Microscopy Facility, primarily based
in the Imaging Suite, offers a broad range of imaging platforms, including widefield and confocal microscopes with fast detectors. Many systems support live imaging, including a Selective Plane Illumination Microscopy (SPIM) system ideal for small animal models and spheroids.

The Flow Cytometry Facility supports
flow cytometry, cell sorting, and mass cytometry across the University of Birmingham (UoB). Based in the College of Medicine and Health, it also supports instruments at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the Institute of Translational Medicine (ITM), and the College of Life and Environmental Sciences. The facility continually updates its equipment and has recently added its first spectral flow cytometer. Services range from user training on self-service instruments to expert-supported cell sorting and GCP-compliant mass cytometry in dedicated ITM labs.
