Alaska INBRE 5 enhances capacity to conduct biomedical and behavioral health training and research within its network of the three universities of the University of Alaska system, Iḷisaġvik College, Southcentral Foundation, and Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. Its Student Research Program offers research internships and career development opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students in addition to training opportunities in data science, analytic chemistry, genomics, biomarker development, and community based participatory research (CBPR), towards preparing a growing pipeline of students in Alaska entering biomedical research careers. AK INBRE 5 continues with its One Health research theme that emphasizes the importance of recognizing the interconnections among the health of people, communities, animals, and their shared environment in the state of Alaska. Developmental Research Project Program awards for Pilot and Research Projects invite applications by investigators emphasizing One Health, as positively peer-reviewed by external experts and recommended by a national External Advisory Committee. Research support in the Data Science Core, the Research Analytics Core for genomic, chemical, and stable isotope analytics, and the CBPR Core for community engaged research is offered to investigators throughout the AK INBRE 5 network in their development towards securing sustainable independent support or conducting summer research programs to engage students at their home institutions. The CBPR Core is especially important for the engagement of communities and local leadership together with investigators in the selection and approach of community-defined research questions and the dissemination of results. The AK INBRE 5 Administrative Core coordinates and leads the network-wide annual research conference, proposal and career development workshops, and seminar series and offers research administration advice to other NIH capacity building programs in Alaska. The Executive Committee of network representatives contributes to AK INBRE 5 management decisions for the network, as well as decisions on funding travel and training support. The Steering Committee of senior leadership from the network institutions offers advice and counsel to the AK INBRE 5 leadership on program foci, effectiveness, and impact including responses to program challenges. The INBRE program has been and will remain crucial to the success of students, faculty, and investigators in biomedical and health research in Alaska.project_title:
